2010 Out of the Darkness

PATRIOT PARK IN SPOTSYLVANIA, VA ~ OCTOBER 16TH, 2010
and in Washington D.C. Walk in DC

TEAM IRISH:
CENTER: DEBRA KERR, Ceremony Speaker as a parent, ISAAC's mom
LEFT SIDE: VIRGINIA KERR, COACH JAY SNYDER, RIGHT: RACHAEL POWELL, & DICK KERR (PAPA)

This was the 3rd Annual Spotsylvania Out of the Darkness Community Walk for Life.
It was started by several young women who were students at a Spotsylvania High School. They lost three friends in a period of 6 months and it had them and their friends in such a roller coaster of emotions...grief, sadness, despair and fear of what their friends might choose to do. With the help of their school counselor they came up with the walk as a positive outlet and resource for themselves and the community. I for one am truly grateful.

Memory Beads were given to each of the participants, many of us wore several.

Green - Loss of a Spouse or Partner
Torquise/Blue - Loss of a Child
Gold - Struggle Personally
Silver - Loss of a Sibling
Purple - Loss of a Relative or Friend
Pink - Loss of a Parent
Red - Support The Cause

Below are registration tables, T-shirts, memory beads and information were provided before the walk.

I am pictured with some of the founding members. The two together on the right Sarah and Katelyn are instrumental in keeping this going. The young woman on the left Katie got involved and shared about To Write Love On Her Arm another movement, that coincides with this for those who self injure themselves... So many hurting people. They, we need to know people care.

After the guest speakers, there was Candle lighting ceremony accompanied by song and artististic rendition before the walk.

Thanks to the many businesses and organizations that helped with the Spotsylvania, VA. I do not have pictures of all who worked, prepared and donated food etc.  The Fredericksburg radio station 99.3 was our sound system.

Hundreds of people, all ages and walks of life participated in the walks.  It was a time of community, healing and all personal quiet reflection.

We walked through memorials along the park in DC at sunset... a beautiful experience to honor those we loved. The balloons had lights in them and guided our way.

Gone but not forgotten...a representative for me of our vets, all wars...any age, who have struggled after serving and sacrificing for our country
